MTB Scenic descend from Sierra Norte to Teotitlán del Valle and Mezcal distillery

Your adventure begins with a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Oaxaca City, climbing deep into the mountains where cool alpine air and endless pine forests set the tone for the day. Upon arrival in the remote mountain village of Cuajimoloyas, we start the morning the local way — with a hearty traditional breakfast overlooking sweeping ridgelines and dense high-altitude forests. It’s the perfect moment to fuel up, breathe in the mountain air, and get ready to ride.

Then it’s time to ride. Our ride begins along high-mountain dirt roads and forest tracks, winding through towering agave fields and quiet pine forests that feel worlds away from the city. As we pedal across the ridgelines of the Sierra Norte, the trail leads us toward the remote mountain community of Benito Juárez, offering a mix of flowing terrain, gradual climbs, and incredible panoramic views along the way.

Feeling strong? Riders can take on an optional challenge climb to reach one of the highest suspension bridges in Oaxaca. The reward at the top is spectacular: wide-open views across the Valles Centrales and the surrounding mountain ranges. It’s a signature moment of the ride and one of the most memorable photo spots of the entire day.

From here, gravity takes control. It’s time to descend. Choose how you want to finish the mountain section:

• Ride a fun intermediate dirt track featuring natural terrain, flowing sections, and a rewarding downhill ride through the forest, or
• Hop in the support van for a quick shuttle back down to the village plaza to relax and regroup.

We continue along a scenic mountain route toward Teotitlán del Valle, a Zapotec village internationally known for its centuries-old weaving traditions. Here, a local family welcomes us into their workshop for a hands-on cultural experience, demonstrating how natural dyes are created from plants, minerals, and insects, and how traditional rugs are woven using techniques passed down for generations.

To close out the day in true Oaxacan fashion, we visit a traditional artisanal mezcal distillery. Learn about the ancestral process behind Mexico’s most iconic spirit — from agave harvesting to underground roasting and small-batch distillation — followed by a guided tasting of premium mezcals.

Then we return to Oaxaca City with tired legs, great stories, and the satisfaction of having experienced one of the most unique mountain biking days in Mexico.
